Line 6 or Marshall amps?

I'm still having trouble picking out an amp in the future, I was going to just get a 100w tube amp by Vox, but I thought getting a half stack amp would be handy if I ever find people to jam with. I heard Line 6 amps are around $600 or over other than Marshall amps being $800+. I need an amp loud enough to compete with the drums obviously but with a price range less than $1000.
Any suggestions?

If you want something loud and cheap just get a crate amp. Marshalls under 1k typically suck too. I would get a solid state over a tube amp if I were you. Tubes can be expensive to replace.

Yeah, after going tube, there's no looking back.
For metal though, I guess some solid state stacks are passable.

Too bad they're going for more than they're actually worth

Crate, no thanks. Buddy of mine owned one and it broke after a few months somehow. I forgot all about Peavy amps, I'll have to check that one out Dawdy. I know nothing about amps and what I'm looking for in them other than they have to be tube and loud enough to play in a band, that's all.
And would a distortion pedal be necessary to have with one of these amps or would the amp itself give me a good enough sound and all I need to add is a noise gate to prevent feedback?

'get a crate' comment was terrible.
Why don't you tell him to just get a Behringer or b52 or some other Chinese made crap.

Or I can blow the $3000 on an Orange amp and get yelled at by my dad.

I traded out my Mesa for this baby, I love it. It's like a JCM800 but with the all mods people like to put on it.

How much would this cost now?

Anywhere (ebay prices) from $250-$400, it's the amp Soundgarden used on Badmotorfinger and Baroness used.

He can if he wants to. It's not like he has an unlimited budget, and pretty much all he wants is something loud and cheap. Therefore, crate amps are your best suggestion. I didn't realize he was picking out the best amp for his tone for his bands groundbreaking new album.

You could say that about anyone that buys high-end gear. Everyone might as well buy budget gear because most will not be coming out with a groundbreaking album. It's smart to look ahead and buy something that you will still enjoy 5 years from now when you progress as a musician, rather that buy some cheap p.o.s and have to buy another when you get tired of it or when you find out it doesn't cut through the mix all that well.

That being said, nothing supplants actually trying gear out.

If you're just playing at home (especially if it's not your own home) I would recommend a low wattage valve amp
like this, with a good distortion and EQ pedal

Yes and Peavey does that. If it is one thing I have learned, and you should know due to your tastes in guitars, it's almost better to save up for what you want instead of just buy the cheapest thing around. Life is too short to play crappy amps/guitars.

Doesn't mean you're bad either, plus you've never heard me play. I'm better than 99% of the ones who talk shit about my playing. Except for DBS, he is much better than me.

I don't think any skill level should be necessary to go out and buy higher end gear, if it happens to be a piece of equipment that sounds good to your ears. I do think a lot of musicians fall into the bigger-is-better mentality when it comes to these $1000+ dollar heads or ridiculously expensive guitars. Not too many really have any kind of tone in their head they want to create, so they end up with high end gear just because. I think it takes a much more interesting musician to get their idea across with gear that isn't necessarily high priced or regarded as high-end.

Also, any musician who considers himself better than another is missing the point. Even if there was an objective way to make that assertion, it's nothing more than masturbation.

How isn't it? You're just going to argue with me just to argue aren't you? Good tactic, enoy using it myself, but please come up with better material otherwise I'm going to lose interest very quickly.

A painter creates paintings, a guitarist creates music. An amp is to a guitarist as an easel or canvas is to a painter.
