Older Peavey 5150 block letter EVH. I got one off of Ebay for around 700 bucks and it's the best amp I've played so far. Wouldn't mind having an ENGL though...

line 6=shit
My first amp was a marshall microstack. It was a piece of shit, so I sold it to my friend for almost double what I payed for it. I then bought a Crate GLX212 it is pretty cool but the footswitch blows (it always falls apart) Line 6 is not shit. Don't listen to that duesh. What ever you do, don't get a generic Les Paul/Marshall set up. Also, does anyone know anything about Krank amps. I know Dime bragged about them, but I would like a second opinion.

Dude, drop the Crate. I had one of em' too and it's not bad if you're going to be running a multi-fx board through the clean channel, but if you want to use the amp's gain (which actually sounds good, don't get me wrong) you better have a noise suppressor in the loop somewhere. Make that at least 2 suppressors. Christ that thing squealed like hell if I turned it past like 3...

I'm thinking of getting this Vox VT120 if I have any extra money left before school. The guitar store here has it on sale for $520 (retail price is $650), I might go back there and try negotiating with the guy to get it dropped down a bit lower.

Jeb, if you are going Vox, get an AC15. My friend has an AC30 and it's almost too much power. They both sound gorgeous, though.

Line 6 fucking sucks. Randall solid state sounds good, I got the kirk hammett signature and it gets right to business.

Jeb, assuming you won't be playing any large venues anytime soon, I'd recommend getting a 100W Marshall full stack for your room.

I have an AC30, it sounds amazing but it is crushingly loud

You can YouTube mostly all of these amps and get an idea of what you're dealing with. Im falling in love with the sound of the EVH III and the Peavey 6505+, both tube, both affordable.
If you wan't Dimes FBD sound why not just do some research to see what he played in that era? With a $2500 budget you'll have plenty.
Cabs are pretty important. Better ones such as the 1960 have ohm selectors so you dont blow your amp to fucking smitherines...
edit:
If you're a serious player, stay the fuck away from Line 6, Crate, and low-end Randall. Despite the Randall worship because of Dime- anything they make under $1k sucks balls- feedback monsters at a loud volume.

1960 cabs are junk.. you get the same speakers in a Mesa or old Crate cab and the construction is a lot more solid thus better sound dynamic.. vintage 30s for life!

I wouldn't call them junk- but definitely not as road worthy as a mesa

Played a Bogner Uberschall, cool if you want the Alice in Chains tone.

I want something that's good for jazz fusion. I'd get the Fish if it wasnt so damn expensive ($2000). Chris Poland uses this too, and I'd like to get that same awesome tone as him.

Why bother? It took you this long to buy a guitar, it'll probably take a decade for an amp.

I just picked up one of these used yesterday for $200. It's pretty badass for the price and sounds just like a tube amp. The gain is a little weak, but I haven't cranked the volume up either. I threw in some added overdrive and now it sounds great.
