I've said this a million times, but it was quite obvious that Dime held back a LOT in his solos. And also, a lot of the things he did that go unnoticed to a lot of people actually take a lot of skill. For example, his fucking rediculous legato.
Listen closely to his solo/s in Shattered. He doubled the first solo and you can barely tell because he played it perfectly.
Also the solo in Throes of Rejection, the tapping run isnt simple, neither is the fast run at the end. Infact Id probably go as far as saying its his most technically challenging solo.
That is an AMAZING solo.

I just listened to it with complete focus for the first time, thanks to your mention of it. My god he was inventive.
And you're right, Probably only about 1/10th of 1% of all guitar players on earth could nail that solo perfectly.

SRV hasn't been mentioned in this thread.
My favorite guitarists are ones that play with restraint.
David Gilmour - some of the best feel ever. Comfortably Numb, his most famous solo. Massive amounts of emotion but still clean and well played. the man's phrasing is one of a kind.
Ritchie Blackmore - a fucking monster on the guitar. why jimmy page is more revered than this guy is beyond me. blackmore's phrasing and use of odd harmonies are brilliant. listen to the hammer on run in Highway Star, it's more technical than it sounds.
Leslie West - not the fastest or most technical player around, but the dude can play the hell out of the guitar. he's written some fantastic riffs in his career. he's also a very good fingerstyle guitarist.
Robert Fripp - what the hell can i say about robert fripp.
Steve Howe - another technical monster, but the man has feel. listen to Mood For A Day, his classical guitar solo. perfect mix of both. his only fault was that he never played quite as cleanly as he could have, apparently he plays alot cleaner nowadays though
Re: Technique or Feel (emotion) which do you prefer?

But even though Petrucci has the ability that very few possess, he still can put out some great feel and tonal spontaneity. My favorite playing of his ever is off of Scenes From a Memory. There are a lot of slower ballady songs and his solos are fuckin tear jerkers bra

Finally, someone appreciates that Petrucci is not just a technical genius.

My favorite solos of his are the more slow ones. He has awesome phrasing and in that setting his feel really shines and resonates.

feel emotion all the way
technique is important but when you play with your own emotions you develop your own technique ad thats a good thing to me
