My favorite guitarists are ones that play with restraint.

David Gilmour - some of the best feel ever. Comfortably Numb, his most famous solo. Massive amounts of emotion but still clean and well played. the man's phrasing is one of a kind.

Ritchie Blackmore - a fucking monster on the guitar. why jimmy page is more revered than this guy is beyond me. blackmore's phrasing and use of odd harmonies are brilliant. listen to the hammer on run in Highway Star, it's more technical than it sounds.

Leslie West - not the fastest or most technical player around, but the dude can play the hell out of the guitar. he's written some fantastic riffs in his career. he's also a very good fingerstyle guitarist.

Robert Fripp - what the hell can i say about robert fripp.

Steve Howe - another technical monster, but the man has feel. listen to Mood For A Day, his classical guitar solo. perfect mix of both. his only fault was that he never played quite as cleanly as he could have, apparently he plays alot cleaner nowadays though

Finally, someone appreciates that Petrucci is not just a technical genius.

My favorite solos of his are the more slow ones. He has awesome phrasing and in that setting his feel really shines and resonates.

technique is important but when you play with your own emotions you develop your own technique ad thats a good thing to me
