Projects
I'm pretty ecstatic. Just got off the phone with a friend of mine that lives in Lincoln (who plays in one of my favorite regional bands) and booked a show for our project this friday. It's a seven-string guitar trio idea that we bounced around and never got off the ground. This arthouse/music venue had all but one band self-destruct on them so we're just going to show up and improv the whole thing.
Trials by fire rule! On top of that I got hired to play bass for a Tom Waits/Captain Beefheart-ish singer/songwriter guy and the main band that I play drums in just released a 7".
It's going to be my year again!
So anyhoo, enough about me. I haven't really heard anything about you people's shit. Where is my Afflux album?

And do any of you guys do open tunings? I need a real evil-sounding one.

It's Efflux motherfucker, and any significant body of recorded work is unlikely to emerge till the summer due to our university commitmentsPflöyd wrote:And do any of you guys do open tunings? I need a real evil-sounding one.
As for evil tunings, I was wondering what it would sound like to add a semitone, so for the purposes of string tension on a seven string I suppose that would be, bass to treble:
A Eb A Eb A D G
It actually makes a pretty nice sounding chord..
I tuned my E's up to F and my G to A. Kind of an open Bm7b5 tuning. It sounds really unsettling. That might work. I'm also tinkering with my phrase sampler. since there won't be any drums, bass, or percussion type of instruments, I'll probably be the "rhythm section" with the phrase sampler.

The original band I was involved with has kind of disolved. My cover band has been messing around with some original material, but not sure how serious that will be.
I'll keep looking for something, but at this point I'm not sure what type of original music I want to get into.

Since my last band wanted to stay drunk, high & surrounded by porn (which would have been just fine with me 8 years ago), I've kind of given up on grinding it out with locals for a while. When the trappings of rock become more important than the rock itself, progress will never be made. I'm not interested in stagnating, so I've decided I'm going to get my Master's degree in recording, so that's my "project" right now. If all goes as planned, I'll be starting next fall and finishing in 2008. Now, if I can just get John Custer to return my phone calls...

Yeah, I'm too old for any of that shit (not that I was into that sort of thing to begin with, really). Thankfully, there is no shortage of people to work with and I seem to be in demand (especially on bass where finding a bassist is next to impossible). At this point, I just like doing "outside of the box" type of projects. Not particularly interested in playing rock/metal type of shit anymore.silverback77 wrote:Since my last band wanted to stay drunk, high & surrounded by porn (which would have been just fine with me 8 years ago), I've kind of given up on grinding it out with locals for a while. Yeah, well, I'm too old AND too married. By the way, congrats on your upcoming projects. I hope they bring you satisfaction both in-process and post-birth. Suprisingly a project I thought would never get off the ground may be doing so. I got a girl who can play guitar and sing. We are going to try to do something the vein of David Bowie (Ziggy era), The Velvet Underground, The Desert Sessions, Mazzy Star, Shivaree, etc.

the only thing i even have in the works right now is a live hip hop band. maybe not a band, just kind of a project. there's a group that performs around here that's actually really good, and i've been talking to them at parties here and there. something about getting a bass player, some drums, keys, and maybe some brass, and laying down some jazzy and funky stuff while 3 or 4 mc's cut shit up.
pretty big change of pace from my backround, but i've always had that syncopatic funk type feel even when i played metal.

That sounds pretty cool. Hell, I'm listening to Loaded right now. I've always enjoyed Bowie/Lou Reed.CFH Eternal wrote:John Custer

The very first recording project I ever did was for a small hip-hop group. I did all the instrumentation (with programmed drums since I couldn't play that well back then). I got to throw keys, bass, even a banjo into the mix. It was pretty fun, even though nothing much ever came out of it beyond a four-song EP.scorn wrote:the only thing i even have in the works right now is a live hip hop band. maybe not a band, just kind of a project. there's a group that performs around here that's actually really good, and i've been talking to them at parties here and there. something about getting a bass player, some drums, keys, and maybe some brass, and laying down some jazzy and funky stuff while 3 or 4 mc's cut shit up.
