Strings

The 2 stores that I normally purchase my Fender Stainless Steel Med. Heavy 45-105's from have both discontinued carrying them. I just bought my first set of DR "Lowrider" Stainless 45-130's (for my 5 String).
Any thoughts, opinions or suggestions for future purchases?

I've tried Blue Steels and I didn't really like the feel of them.

I've tried DR Hi-Beams and I'm still unsure if I liked them or not. They weren't bad but they didn't make me jump for joy either.

GHS Boomers are just shit.

I always end up going back to Ernie Ball strings. I love the way they feel but they're pretty bright at first and they seem to break pretty easily.

I use Elixirs. They stay consistant sounding throughout the life of the string. I don't have to boil them either. If you play aggressively with a pick a lot, though, you'll wear the coating off the strings after awhile. But if you like the way they sound at first, they'll stay that way until you have to change them.

I've had the same set of elixirs on my bass for over 6 months now. Still sound like they did when I got them out of the package. To me, that's worth the extra cash you spend on them.

I've heard good things about Elixirs too, the guy who produced my band swears by them. I still just buy Ernie Ball sets though. I might try the Elixirs next tiem I change my strings.. I never seem to braek my guitar strings

Those Elixir strings are creepy; they're like those tissues w/ lotion in them. Who the hell wants to use a kleenex that's already slimy?

For a long time I used GHS Super Steels because I was able to get them in whatever gauge I wanted (standard 45 65 85 105 130, heavy 50 70 90 110), but I found that they were inconsistent in quality. I tried LaBellas and thought they were a goddamn ripoff. I finally settled on DR because they are available everywhere and they are great about putting together custom sets (current set: 45 65 85 115 135 Hi-Beams). They are by far the most consistent strings I've ever used. I like the Lo-Riders too, but prefer the Hi-Beams (round core vs the hex core of the Lo-Riders) because they're a bit brighter. You can always roll off treble, but you can't add it in without it sounding fake.

D'Addario & Ernie Ball should be ashamed of themselves for producing such crap. Both tie for worst strings on the market. STAY AWAY if you value your tone.

I just played out with the DR Lowriders this past weekend.
In short, not as bright as the fender stainless's I used to use, which is fine with me, because I always thought they sounded best after about 2 weeks use on them. Most of the stuff I'm playing on my 5, I'm using a compressor/mid sweep (Korn,DamagePlan,Slipknot) anyway, so I want thunder lows and bright hi's, the DR's seem to have "my sound" out of the box, now I just have to play the shit out of them to see how they last.

red dyed strings. pretty cool
