..All-time favourite. Motivate answer; why, style/technique/songs whatever you can come up with.
Mine..
1. Dimebag ofc.. totally reinventing the metal-scene and bringing the fastest fucking shreds you've ever heard of. R.I.P!
2. Slash (of Guns n' Roses) .. His solos are just mental, cool style live also
3. Kirk Hammet (of Metallica \,,/), mindraping technique with the coolest solos, for instance Metallica - Orion
more to come.

there's no way I can take this thread seriously, with comments such as kirk hammet having "amazing tecnique" , but what the hell, I'll awnser it.
the first 2 that pop in my head because they always do in these types of questions, are shawn lane and chuck schuldiner.

For me:
Chuck Schuldiner: I love the way he writes music and his style.
Darrell Abbott: Fucking intense style which I really love, he did strange things which weren't all to present at the time which makes him unique, also he's a big influence to me I believe.
James Murphy
Robert Fripp
Dimebag
Matt Pike
Ritchie Blackmore
Dave Mustaine
Scott Gorham/ Brian Robertson/ Gary Moore
Dave Murray/ Adrian Smith
Randy Rhoades
Joe Walsh
Brian May
Slash
Rory Gallagher
Billy Gibbons
Just some that come off the top of my head

Why are you giving him a lecture on Becker when you didnt even know about Concerto untill you downloaded it after I "butchered it" about 2 weeks ago?

Dimebag Darrell - awesome unique style, plenty of cool showy guitar tricks, great songwriter, had so many tiny nuances in his playing, shitload of ability
James Murphy
Jeff Loomis

You don't have to take me seriously because of me liking Kirk Hammets guitar-technique, but the thread-topic remains.
I agree with Shawn Lane being great.. but does he have any famous songs/solos? the only thing I know about him is he had a swedish bassist named Jonas Hellborg

do they need to be famous to be great? No. Kirk Hammet by fact has poor tecnique. I'm not making this up, it's just what is obvious. Take a look at any recent video of him playin solos, and dont tell me you dont vomit in your mouth when you hear that. Now Shawn Lane: flawless genius. Dont even get me started on his pentatonic phrasing, pure genius. If you're into that, well to each his own. I myself dont admire mediocrity.

it really wasnt a lecture. i've gotten into them since you posted that song. they're a cool band, and jason becker's disease is interesting.
The Speed Metal Symphony album is mostly Marty Friedman as it was more or less wrote by him. For Beckers signature sound listen to Perpetual Burn.
