The solos on proud to be loud were played by Marc Ferrari, not dime.

On the actual Power Metal album? I thought he just did that with them live or something.

Yup, I've got the original vinyl and he's credited for both the writing and solos on Proud To Be Loud, and the outro solo on We'll meet again. Guys a pretty good player. But dont be pissed, it just shows how much of an influence he was on Darrell at the time.

Here's another guess solo. Pretty easy one. I recorded this after I got baked with my drummer earlier, so don't mind the mistakes.

This is a tab I made for it (nothing else to do) if anyone wants to learn it. It's a complete brain teaser at first but it's fun to play when you can do it off muscle memory.

Code: Select all

(--18-15-------------------------------------------------------------18/21-18-)
(--------17-------17-16-15----------------------------17-------17-20----------)
(-----------18-15----------18-17-18-15----------15-18----15-18----------------)
(--------------------------------------17-14-17-------------------------------)
(-----------------------------------------------------------------------------)
(-----------------------------------------------------------------------------)
(-----------------------------------------------------------------------------)

(--------------------------------------------------------------15-18\15-------)
(--20-17-------17-16-15----------------------------17-------17----------17----)
(--------18-15----------18-17-18-15----------15-18----15-18---------------18--)
(-----------------------------------17-14-17----------------------------------)
(-----------------------------------------------------------------------------)
(-----------------------------------------------------------------------------)
(-----------------------------------------------------------------------------)

(--------------------------------------------)
(--------------------------------------------)
(-15----18-17-16-15----15--------------------)
(----17-------------19----17----------17-20--) Then just transscend this part
(----------------------------19-16-19--------) down half a step starting at 17
(--------------------------------------------)
(--------------------------------------------)

Some of the stuff he does is insane, I tried learning the Psalm of Lydia sweeps and realized I have a long ways to go, haha.

I never got around to learning the whole arpeggio section of The Psalm of Lydia. I figured out like half of it and then got lazy.

I learned the arpeggio section in This Godless Endeavour towards the end though.

Jeff Loomis is one of my favourite guitarists. If you can play his stuff then you're a pretty amazing guitarist.

I'm going to have to disagree with some of the later comments. jeff loomis is pretty good and all, but i would not hold him in such high esteem. oh and dont take me wrong, I love his music and songwriting but having the capability to play his stuff isn't amazing. (when compared to other guitarists and compositions)

Most of his lead writing on the latest album is unfocused in my opinion. But on his previous ones, especially Dead Heart in a Dead World, his soloing is very well written.

Check out the solo from Engines of Hate, intro to Psalm of Lydia, arpeggio section near the end of This Godless Endeavour, Enemies of Reality, Tomorrow Turned Into Yesterday, The Heart Collector.

Try some/all of those out if you want. I have a high opinion of him because I think he has a lot of control, and a very melodic but not typical style. Not to mention he has a shitload of ability, and only busts out when it's necessary. Some of the solos I reccomended are just well written and not necessarily his most technical.

I'll check em out warhead! Actually, I learned psalm a few months ago when i made a thread about nevermore. it was the only song i knew that was playable on a six string so i tried that one out. I think the only sweep passages on that album was on the last track and psalm.. and just one sweep lick on that song that went " just set your mind freeee..."
yeah, he's got a pretty cool melodic style actually, that what i dig most about him. in the technical aspect you're right, he doesn't go balls out all the time, which is a good thing. stuff like dragonlord, or whatever its called, can get old real quick.

Oh the other sweep you're talking about was in A Future Uncertain. He does this really bizarre arpeggio at the end of his solo in Born, you should check it out.

 And you mean Dragonforce. I could never get into them, I think their speed loses it's effect after the first 20 seconds. Not to mention all of their songs sound the same.

They put on a hell of a live show, but all their songs are the same crap. I saw a guy who was like 40 years old at their concert and he knew every lyric to every song.
