you dont understand "shredding" in most cases is a pattern of 3 or 4 notes played faster then hell people like Vai and Yngwie are not shredders the are good enough to play as fast as shred but with accual melodic movements

i had a guitar teacher who taught me this stuff he sayd that "shred" as it is most comonly referd to is several different patterns of no more that 4 notes at the top of a scale played at a high speed
most of the time this so-called skill is used in older thrash bands as solo's
what Vai and Yngwie do is playing complex leads at a high speed
Vai and Yngwie are WAY to good to be called Shredders

The best shredder is Gilbert, or Petrucci. They both tend to play fast alot of the time and can play faster than anyone else in that style. Shredding is a combination of fast alternate picked runs and sweeps.
I wouldn't call Vai shred, because he tends to be a pull off/hammer on and tap man more than alternate picking, not to say he doesn't - He just tries to keep his tone more smooth sounding by avoiding alternate picking when it's not "needed" in the song. Same goes with satch - He is almost purely legato, that ain't shred, just fast as fuck.
you make a valid point. but look at where shredding is (by popular belief) deemed to have started from. eddie van halen. he wasnt "captain fast picking" by any means and was famous for his rapid left hand work more so than how fast he could pick.
like i said before, there are many different interpretations of what shredding is. i tend to think of it as more of a compliment moreso than an insult, because i think of it as a guitarist who plays well and employs his techniques where they are needed.
doesnt the term come form the idea that your playing so fast your skin is shredding?
I know thats not neccesarily what people would consider its definition, because i think its more about how a guitarist is innovative, but still the point stands

I don't see how anyone can even say someone is faster than Rusty Cooley. Gilbert is a good guitarist, just watch him play Frenzy. Not that fast though.
