i used to play a guitar through a fender princeton 112 w/a jack labeled "preamp out" which i pluged a 1/4" cable from that to the input jack of my marshall jcm 800 amp head which was hooked up to a peavey cab and it worked just fine

As long as the preamp out defeats the connection to the power amp and stops the power amp from sending a load to the speaker it'll work swimmingly. Of course half the allure of tube amps is the preamp section slamming the power amp and rectifier tubes.

101 needs to be more specific about what he would seek to accomplish. When I think of master/slave relationships I think more of DAW or MIDI equipment.
