Bass Amplifiers
I just started playing bass and what are some good beginner bass amps? Any other advice about bass gear/technique would be appreciated.

When I started I just plugged my bass into an old portable karaoke system. You don't need much unless you're planning on using or adding effects later on. You could use a guitar amp if you have one. If you're planning on buying an amp, though, SWR makes some good low end shit.
I'm sure there are tons of amp brands that are great but I only have experience with Ampeg and SWR.

You need a 1973 Ampeg SVT 350 and an 8 x 10 cabinet.
Anything else is just a compromise. It should only set you back about $4500.00.

Carvin amps are inexpensive, have tons of tonal options, and are built pretty damn well.
This one is both cheap and loud.
