In all honesty, I enjoy both, but with the exception of a handful of songs from each category, 90's Metallica is much more polished and thoughtful.
Jason Newsted is clearly the sexiest member of all involved parties, however.

I don't know, I defy you not to get lost in Kirk's longing stare in his eyes.

'80s Pantera is pretty bad. I don't consider anything before CFH "real" Pantera.
'90s Metallica is a little hit and miss(Reload is solid but unspectacular, and TBA has some amazing songs but also some singles that sounded a little too "polished" and were played to death by radio). But I love Load and would probably call it my favorite Metallica album.
So, obviously the latter.
Give me a reason, 'cause I got nothing to gain/so what am I doing now?
Feeling complacent, I cannot be contained/I'm so lost and lonely now
