Do you realize that Pantera was only around.....
for a little more than a decade, not counting their glam days. That kinda trips me out to think about......most of my favorite bands have been around for 20 or 30 years, and even most of my favorite "newer" bands have already been around over a decade. It makes me feel lucky to have seen them live a couple times and at least have been a fan for the last few years of their existence.
Give me a reason, 'cause I got nothing to gain/so what am I doing now?

Meh you have to count their glam days. I know you're referring to their "Heavy Metal" years, but the band as whole rocked hard for a good 20 years.

I can't count it because I don't consider that the "real" Pantera. I've barely even listened to any of their glam stuff.....God I loathe that genre.

That's obvious, because if you did you'd realize that it kicks the shit out of true 80s butt rock.Psycho Gangster wrote:I've barely even listened to any of their glam stuff

If you shun the way they used to sound, how can you honestly call yourself a fan? There's so much early shit that fucking tears. They just evolved, is all. Just like many other '80s metal bands.Psycho Gangster wrote:I can't count it because I don't consider that the "real" Pantera. Power Metal is just fucking awesome, you have to admit...

Re: Do you realize that Pantera was only around.....
I'm sorry man, but this sounds silly. If you haven't listened to most of it, then you're making a blind assumption. Just because post-CFH they never acknowledged it doesn't mean it sucked or it was no longer a part of their history. There's great musicianship there even though the production sucked. Pantera was always Pantera the day the Abbott's picked up their instruments.Psycho Gangster wrote:I can't count it because I don't consider that the "real" Pantera. I used to joke years ago that Power Metal was better than CFH, but if you gave it a listen you'll see just how good that album is. The rest of these guys will tell ya...

There are a couple of tracks on Power Metal that could easily pass for CFH era if you didn't know any better, and vice-versa. A lot of the songs on CFH were written in the '80s, not long after finishing the previous album. I actually have heard a few old bootlegs where they were playing 'Over and Out' as late as 1990.

I actually enjoy "Power Metal", aside from when Phil does a few cheezy vocal bits.

It might sound a bit cheesy in some parts, but every band did back then. They were really just a bunch of kids, who didn't quite know what they were doing at the time, messing around and having fun. You have to admit, though, his voice does soar through octaves literally as good or better than Tate, Halford, Dickinson or anyone. '80s Phil is hugely underrated. With his talent, I honestly believe he could have become any type of singer he wanted, even outside of metal.

Re: Do you realize that Pantera was only around.....
I remember when Vulgar came out and some of my friends were like:
"WTF?? What happened to his voice? What's w/ all the yelling shit?"
To which I said:
"That just shows what a real singer he is. Only a real singer can go from vox that make girls cream their jeans to vox that make them shit their pants".

So True, I had buddies pissing and moaning that they sold out when Vulgar hit, said the same shit, "Why does he sound like macho man randy savage" hahaha
Re: Do you realize that Pantera was only around.....
The only album i've heard from that era is PM and it's awesome. It doesn't sound much like straight forward power metal, tho.

Re: Do you realize that Pantera was only around.....
They were never really glam, some people try sayin well they looked kinda glam. Mainly, they all had a Van Halen look to em, and if you listen to their pre CFH music, it's not glam at ALL. like "Killers" or "Death Trap" thats Straight Up Metal, you call that glam, get your head checked, theres nothin gumbally, sing songy motley crue bs goin on at ALL. if PanterA was glam in the 80's, then why did they play with Slayer, Metallica and Megadeth; Glams Biggest Rivals?Psycho Gangster wrote:I can't count it because I don't consider that the "real" Pantera. Re: Do you realize that Pantera was only around.....
Vulgar does it for me.
Realizing that they had a glam background for a COUPLE of albums? It's like the Metallica DVD where they realize that Bob Rock used to be a woman in some fucking pretty boy band in his day. It's almost as bad as Vanilla Ice painfully trying the nu-metal shit.
Love what Pantera became, happy for it. Songs like "Walk" gave me something to focus my life on. But radical style changes will ALWAYS lose old and gain new fans, sometimes unfortunately (Celtic Frost "Cold Lake", anybody???")
