wtf is wrong with my amp

symptoms: it seems to be distorting in a bad way, not in a goodway. for instance, i hit the clean channel, gain is on 2 and it feels like its on 8. with the distortion channel, again its distorting, but in a bad way. i hope its the power tubes therefore i can put new ones in.
1 more question, zakk and kerry king use 6550's in their amps and they are said to have greater headroom. what is headroom, how does it apply to amps etc..?

Does your guitar have active or passive pickups?

Are you suggesting that his battery has died? He probably has checked that if he's asking tube questions. Maybe not.

Youd be suprised how many people rip their shit appart thinking its this huge problem that needs to be fixed, when all you had to do is replace a 9 volt- not tryin to insult anyone intelligence- just tryin to help

haha, no shit
back to subject. doesn't quite sound like it's a power tube issue.. possible the bias needs to be reset? maybe you used tube that arn't supposed to be used in your amp?? what model and make is your amp?

i've tried my amp with both guitars(one has passive, the other has active PU's) and i get the same result. its a Marshall dsl 50 with el34's in the power section. i'm sure the bias isn't tweeked to perfection but it hasn't changed since i got the amp and the tone has. its distorting on the clean channel like i cranked up the gain. oh shit i'll just have to take it to a tech
1 other question regarding tubes. will 6550's or 6l6's fit in the tube sockets or will they be gay and need recutting. what do you guys recommend for metal for tubes and which company. i have JJ preamps and the tech said they're awesome but some people say they suck hot dirty donkey love

did your problem occur quickly? or did it slowly get worse?

ive had problems with my amp, dont know if its the same kind you had though
my gain and distortion acted weird, they changed volume and sounded muted etc, anyway, they were fucked
i found out it were the reed contacs in the knobs, i changed them all and nearly electrocuted myself
after that, my amp worked perfect for an hour, and then it was fucked again. i never touched it ever since
