5 or 4 string bass?

I am getting my wife a new Bass for xmas and I wondering if the extra cash is worth it for the 5 string.

Would like to hear from some bass players on this one. Is the 5 string really better or just a gimmick that hardly gets used?

How long has she been playing? If not long or just learning, don't complicate it, get a 4 string.

What type of music? If she is not playing alot of "dropped" tune songs or music that calls for alot of low end, again...keep it simple, she can always move up to a 5 string later if she is getting good.

I'd start with 4 if a beginner...

She has played in the past but has not had one for about 5 years... You might be right keeping it simple....

Of course I am thinking of myself as well on the deal and have always wanted a 5 string bass to fuck around on.. :|):

I love my 5 string. If she's new to the frets go with a 4. If you do go with a 5 you don't have to drop the low string depending on what you tune it to. The neck is considerably wider though.

Get a five. She won't stick with it more than likely anyway and you just got yourself a five!
