I've been stuck on learning one riff of a song for a while. I know how to play it, I just can't play it with the rest of the song. By itself, no problem. Help me PBB! I've tried playing it slow with a metronome and gradually building speed, changing the way I fret it (using index and middle fingers instead of middle and ring), what the fawk!

More practice

With all that speed building stuff you have to be able to absolutely nail it before you pick up the tempo..

I can nail it at full speed, but not with the rest of the song, here's the entire passage, if it helps:
Code: Select all
G|--------------------------------------------|
D|--------------------3-------------------3---|
A|*----------3--2--2------------3--2--2-------|
E|-----0--2---------------0--2----------------|
G|-----------------------------------------------------------|
D|-----------------------------------10--9--------9----------|
A|----------------10--------8-----9------------8-----8--7---*|
E|--3-2-1---0--9------0--7-----0------------0--------------8-|
that last bit I can't play with the song.

I do that sometimes too. I'll learn a passage and finally get it and not be able to play it in the context of the song its for for whatever reason. The tempo change or not being able to get into the mindset of the riff fast enough. I don't know. The only thing that helps me is playing the song over and over and over and over and over.

Practice the transition, not the entirety of the part itself.
