I need a new bass

Seeing as the one I have was free and sucks, and I am going to start playing again.

www.rondomusic.com has some cheap basses, but I'm not sure of quality. I'm looking to spend under $300 bucks, then I need a small practice amp because my Marshall mini-stack sucks.

I was thinking a P-Bass or a Jazz Bass, I need something with a really good sound for rock and metal.

A Rickenbacker would be nice, but out of my price range

Yamaha basses are really good for the money.

My brother has a pacifica guitar that plays really well and was cheap as anything, the electronics were dogshit but they're easy enough to upgrade/replace anyway.

The Rondo basses are kind of crummy but workable. Check out Essex or Squier.

Yeah I've been told to go Squier, price wise they're not bad.

At the end of the day, for that price all you can really ask is that it has a straight neck and stays in tune.. but that's all you really need

I played a Squier the other day in a guitar store and was very surprised at how nice it was. I've never owned one, but the quality of Squiers has seemed to improve lately. It looked great, sounded great, and felt great. It's not on the level of my Schecter or my friend's Fender, but if you're a beginner it would be an excellent purchase.

Saw a sick Washburn for 300 bucks used, goes for 800 new. I might get it.

I like my Peavy, it's got a lot of fret buzz but I think that's mostly because I suck and am sloppy.

I think I got it. I'll get an acoustic/electric. Dean sells one new for 150, so for starting back out I'll do that.

I kind of want to get a 6 string too, we'll see.

I have an acoustic/electric Dean bass and the thing sounds amazing running straight into a PA.

I don't know how the cheap ones will sound, but I paid extra for the Performer in koa. It seems to have a lot less "plonkiness" to the tone and, frankly, it's fucking beautiful.

If you don't plan on playing out a lot or whatever, an inexpensive one for just practicing at home with should be alright. It'll build your hand-strength, that's for sure.

P.S. I played a six-string bass and I sounded like an asshole. Having all those extra strings makes you feel like you have to justify having them and you end up playing like some muso-nerd and scribbling over everything. I hate players who blow through their chops in a song so I definitely ditched it.
Five is the most I'll play now and even then, I have to make sure I'm not trying to run scales or play like Claypool.

Good to know, yeah I need to get back into it so I'm just going to start off with this.

If you know how to play, you don't need an entry level bass unless you want to save money. If you're serious about playing shell out the extra cash for something that's going to play nice and leave you wanting to play more. Cheap basses have an odd feel to the neck that leaves (tee hee leaves) me not wanting to play it any more, it feels gummy.

It'll be fine, I haven't played in over a year so I'm starting out fresh. No use in buying a more expensive bass when I'm just going to be practicing and jamming with friends.

I've owned cheap basses before, Dean's acoustics play just fine.

Check out some cheap Ibanez basses, maybe a used one. Ibanez is great at making a "knockaround" that can actually be quite playable.

I did like the Ergodyne 600, really smooth to play.

Like I said I'll get a cheap acoustic/electric, and if I keep up with it I'll buy a better one.

I saw a nice washburn in the store too.

I've been thinking about getting a used Fender Jazz bass. I kind of want to learn to slap and pop all funk like.

My Jazz isn't really all that good for slapping. The string-spacing is kind of narrow and to get the sound you want you should get something active pickups.

I use my Schecter for slapping stuff. It's a funk monster!

My second choice would be a nice Ibanez with actives. Good choice? I'm definitely not a bassist by trade.

I have an Ergodyne and it's not bad at all. Has a decent feel, but nowhere near the feel of a Schecter. Damn those are amazing. :aargh:

I'm pretty impressed with my $250.00 ESP/ltd les paul bass. It doesn't compare to my US Fenders, but I would not hesitate to play it out live. It sounds very crisp and clean. Great for slap/pop.
