And popularity is somehow important now? You don't need to be popular to be a good band, so it would seem to me that playing live would only be essential for bands who are dedicated to making money. There are a lot of black metal bands that have never done a single live show, like Burzum. There are also countless bands who don't or can't do live shows anymore, like The Doors, Neutral Milk Hotel, Coltrane etc., and they are still massively popular. Granted, playing live may have been essential in their becoming famous in the first place, I don't deny that. But it does say to me that you don't have to keep doing live shows to still be considered great and to still reach countless people. Live shows only reach a handful of people each night.
