Since Bassphemy slacked, I'll pick it up from here.
I'll start with my favorite avant-jazz group:
Masada
This is a one of the albums from John Zorn's "songbook" in recorded form. All the songs are written with a structure of music rules (can only use a certain scale/mode/staff) and is perfromed on this album as a quartet of Sax, trumpet, bass, and drums.
It sounds like a cross between jazz and klezmer and is very cool!

Maybe to a non-musician.
I'm more excited about this thread than the other one honestly. |

The Sun Tryst - The Sleeping Gold
Side project of Anti Filppu, formerly of Omnium Gatherum (vocals).
The Finnish word for their music is "" which translates into "art rock" in English I guess. They're not signed to a label, always seem to be busy with life, this project gets put on the back burner quite often it seems; but they've managed to record a couple albums and put them up on their site to download for free.
Jazz/progressive influenced rock, kind of avant-garde or experimental, and from what I understand they used "unorthodox" methods of recording it (by todays standards, IE not digital).
I've been listening to this album for about a year and I love it every time I listen to it. Might not suit your fancy but whatever, I really dig it.
Here's a site with the track listing, as I'm sure it's going to be out of order when you open this file:
http://www.melankolia.net/artrock/trystdisco.html
1. A Place To Hide In This City
2. The Warmth
3. Hard Rain Fell
4. Park Romanticism
5. In The Cellar
6. Night Cafe & Conversations
7. Anchorage |

Post another place to upload to, please. My uploads take forever to upload for whatever reason.
This is my last one for today, regardless:
Alex Skolnick Trio -- Transformation
It's a jazz trio (I'm sure you're all familiar with Skolnick being the lead guitarist in Testament once upon time) where Skolnick is playing jazz versions of old hard rock hits like Judas Priest's "Electric Eye" , Deep Purple's "Highway Star", Pink Floyd's "Money", and some other cool tunes. His guitar playing on this album trumps most everything he's done with Testament, in my opinion.

That's cool, i'm just amazed about how some random people from around the world know about Omnium gatherum, let alone a side project of their awful former vocalist . Local band
I might have a few OG pics from last summer that i took.. |

I personally really liked Anti's vocals. Pretty absurd style, but I think it really fit the band and was kind of refreshing, honestly. |

Their new album is awesome. New guy is cool but I still liked Anti's vocals more than his. |

I listened to this today, I enjoyed it for the most part The sections when the sax and trumpet are wildly soloing against each other sounds pretty horrible in places (although there's no doubt that they can play) I particularly like the slower tunes and the more tasteful unison/harmony riffing. The rythm section is kiler too, I like it when you can actually hear the drums get quieter and the bass following suit, it remings me of 21st century schitzoid man |
