I have $550. Suggest a good guitar for that price. At least a good brand. Just an all-around good sounding instrument.

Go.

A fender fat strat would be a good allrounder, I haven't played one though so I don't know what they're like in terms of value for money.

PRS SE Tremonti, or the PRS SE Paul Allender.
Pretty good sounding guitars and a cheap price.

The santana's sound like shit though.

Hit ebay. What particular style are you shooting for though? A Les Paul would be great all-around, but if you're more into metal stuff, go for a super strat style (e.g. ibanez, esp, jackson, etc)

Just looking for something that can shift around decently. Although it'd be fun to mess around with a Floyd Rose style bridge...

I'm not really looking in to playing with a band as a guitarist, or in to any particular style. I like to play along to CD's and improv a bit. That's fun.

Thanks for the advice.

If you do get a guitar with a Detuner (Floyd Rose Tremelo) I would suggest getting some big bends nut sauce and putting it on the blade of the trem along with putting it under the strings on the bridge, helps them stay in tune much better IMO
