Set thru vs neck thru construction

Post by Hiran »

So I'm looking into getting a LTD MH400 NT; 24 frets, EMG 81/85 active pickups but the set up of the neck is set thru and I'm wondering how this compares to neck thru set up? The MH-250 NT is a neck thru but it doesn't have the EMG 81/85 pick ups which I want. Can anyone help me out?

Some people say a neck-thru has better sound and note sustain than a set neck or a bolt on.

I have an M350, which is similar to the MH400 except it has a reverse headstock, cheaper pickups, and a single coil at the mid position. It's a great middle of the road guitar.

unless you're a pro and make money playing guitar this shouldn't be much of an issue. neck thru is said to have more sustaine.

try out both and buy which ever you're more comfortable with; both feel and price
... You're killing me, Smalls.

Ihave a neck-thru Mh-250nt , and the sustain is better then set thru My H-1000 .

Here's why a neck thru is better also .

set-thru

Neck-thru,

Better access to upper frets . I like them both, but I use the neck-thru more !

I should say the MH-400 is real good bang for the buck , got all the extras and is one fine axe !

I have a MH-1000 coming , also nice axe ! :)

The neck thru's that I've built seem to sound better
I don't seem to have the knack for the bolt ons

This novilty guitar for a friend is going to be one
heavy piece of maple. Gonna get a pro to mill the neck slot
and mount it.

The head stock is either gonna be 'OFF' or 'WAD'
He's gonna want a few different necks to switch it up.

I would have rather designed it as a neck thru.
But he wants to be able to change necks.
He thinks he'll just use it for the last encore of the night.

I only build 1 or 2 guits a year. otherwise I build utility trailers
for cars and light trucks.
I use the CNC machines at work to makes any
shape I want, at no charge. Gives me the flexibility to
design any custom guitar or what ever, to the customers wishes.

I don't argue with the customer. Give them what they want
and accept payment. Can't argue with that.

Heres some trailer designs that the guy I assemble the trailers for
has designed.

He also sells the design plans as well for the 'do it your selfer'

I'm a mold/tool maker by trade.
At Work we use Haas CNC's and the Cad/Cam software we primarily use
are MAstercam X2 with Solids, Unigraphics and Visi-Series. We also
have SolidWorks, but I don't know how to use it that well.

Here is one of the smaller Haas VF3 CNC's. with the 4th axis set up
for casting production.

I was working there for a while and there's all types of machines and all kinds of wood.. so I can probably build my own guitars.. but i dont know how to, and it sounds like hard work. I really want to make one though! probably an 8 string or something haha.

PA I wasen't implying that you made guitars or was comparing hobbies.

I was just checking ya out, ya seem alright.

I don't make guitars for a living, the FUCK guitar will be the
first one a buddy asked me to build through my bussiness at home.
He can write it off towards his home studio studio.

My kids are getting old enough to give me some extra time for
my own hobbies, finally.

I only made 5 guitars total in a 4 year span, sorry if you expected
more from me. Trust me, only one is really worth bragging about.

I built one guitar for my nephew, and a few for close friends.
I helped my Pops build 5 or 6 Zitars and we made a small harp
years ago.

I'll try to find some pics but I'm not calling around to get them.

When I win the lottery I will own a wood shop only build guitars and
hopefully never work again...lol...yeah right

Dimejandro, if you have the time its not that hard but you need lotsa
of spare time. Fuck, your father has the best place for you to get
started. It you do bolt ons you only get one shot at the neck slot.
I fucked up two bodies that way and rendered them useless.
DAM.

This is cooler than my homemade guitars
My buddy owns this company http://www.maceacherndrums.com
I didn't do any moldwork for the Claws. He went straight
to a hard tool diecaster. My shop does mainly perminant moulds
some proto typing but no high volumes

this guy had one of the first set

heres my piece of crap kit with a set of claws on it

If I ever have enough money for custom guitars I'll get 2;

The practical one will be a Carvin, the luxury one will be an ESP
