What would be the best string gauge to use to tune a Dean ML with a Floyd Rose bridge to BEADGB?

Im using Ernie Ball Not Even Slinkys:- 12 16 24p 32 44 56

They sound alrite but the 24p sounds dull and gives a kind of "plunk" sound.

Is there any other brand which would be better?

It's not the pickups they sound good, the problem is only with one string.

I used to play on GHS boomers, lately it has just been plain old DR 9's, pretty soon I'm sure I'll be on some other brand.

A good question would be how often do you change your strings? Me? Every 2 weeks or so, g, b and high e strings can go to hell.

i use the "not even slinkys" for d standard and drop c, but when i was tuning to A standard with a floyd, i liked the bartitone strings from d'addario. i think you'll like em. i think it was a .60 at the low e.

DR is really willing to put together custom sets. If you're tuning down below C, you want to go with a 60 or heavier low B. I'd recommend a 70. They key to getting the gauges you want is finding a dealer that will order them for you. I don't personally like D'Addario or Ernie Ball, but the most important thing here is getting the gauges you want and being able to get them consistently. Ain't nothing worse than having to re-adjust the Floyd every time you buy a goddamn set of strings. Also, you might have to drill a bit bigger hole into your tuning peg for the lowest couple strings. And carve a bigger slot in the nut. www.stewmac.com for nut slot files and other gtr fixin' tools. A regular carbide drill bit in a slightly larger gauge than your string will do.

Good luck, and let us all know what you find that works for you.

I've done that before, but I wouldn't recommend it. If you DO have to do that, make sure you have a soft-lead pencil to rub into the fucked-up nut slot. That'll help keep the string from binding across your Franken-nut. Next time, go get a round, tapered file from Home Depot. They're like $6 and are a great tool to have for customizing your nut slots & bridge saddles to accommodate your huge, manly stings.

...or go buy a fucking 5-string.

If it one thing I have learned when fixing/improving something on the guitar is if you don't know what your doing then don't do it, take it to a real tech, and have him show you what your doing. Also with downtuning granted, if someone tunes to down to B, A sharp, or A I give them credit (example: Warhorse, YOB, Electric Wizard). Yet for me anything after C standard starts to lose it's punch.

Ernie Ball makes terrible strings for downtuning, SS or not, especially on a floating trem. If you're playing a 6er, and depending how far down you want to go (a la philipino juicy girl), go with a D'Addario or Dean Markley 7-string set and just trash the 11. Buy just one set, though, you may not like the shit. And the "plunk" may be a fucked up fret, the bridge or the individual saddle for that string may be too low, or your neck is bowing. De-string and run your neck on a flat surface, then adjust. If that's a bitch, then buy a yardstick and run it across the neck to see if it's straight.
