i record straight into my computer using line out on my amp. sounds great and i've never had many problems with it. but nw im working on a post rock/ symphonic/psychadelic thing and most of the guitars are clean. i love the tones im getting but you can hear the picking and its fucking annoying. ive tried eq stuff and switching picks but it's still there.

It's picking up the pick noise more because the hard strike of you hitting the string is going straight to the recording medium instead of being filtered through an amp/speaker/microphone. You can probably EQ it out a bit.

There are several causes for this & thus several possible remedies. The first thing I would do is examine your picking technique. How are you holding the pick? Where on the string are you picking? Is your pick plastic? Nylon? Tortex? Something else? Are you really digging in? Are you hitting the pickups w/ your pick (or slamming the strings into the pickups)?

Mess around with your technique and see if you do anything to minimize the noise you're hearing. If that doesn't work, check the setup on your guitar. Make sure the action, truss rod, and pickup height are all in order relative to your playing style. What kind of strings are you using?

Next, look at the other parts of your rig, and inspect EVERYTHING (from output jack on your guitar to input on your computer. LEAVE NO STONE UNTURNED). If you do this right, you'll only have to do it once, so the time spent will be well worth it.

If you can, mic your amp. There is something magical about a miked amp that adds its own character to your tone and helps eliminate the magnifying glass effect of going direct.

Hope this helps.

You could try using a softer pick.
