How advanced are you? I've been playing bass for a few years and I kinda practice every day, but not too long. Just about an hour a day tops. I can play a few simple songs (mostly Rage Against The Machine, Black Sabbath, some Megadeth etc.), although I don't play in a band. My technique is definitely lacking because I used to play in a strange way and I've just begun to play correctly lately.
---about 4,5/10 - 5/10---
Pfloyd, I want honest answers, so don't use 20 words I'll need to look up in a dictionary. Just rate yer skills

this is difficult to answer because i don't think i'm a bad guitar player, but there are fucking thousands of better players than me. i can play most of the stuff i listen to though, so i reckon maybe 6 or 7/10.

1 or 2. I never got past the Metallica tab book stage. I can rip the shit out of a few Hetfield chords. That is all.

Can you compose a solo? Do you fuck up from time to time?

i've passed my grade 5 so i know a fair bit of basic theory. i would have done more grade work but it took the fun out of playing for me. i don't tend to write many solos cos i'm not good enough to make them that interesting, although i know what scales sound good over certain progressions. i fuck up a lot, especially when i've had a drink, which is counter-productive for my band because whenever we play live i need a drink before i go on. so in answer to your questions....
yes / yes

Are we talking on a particular instrument or overall?
Regardless, since such an assessment is pretty arbitrary, I'll just feign ignorance and say I don't know.

7....I'd say 8 but I'm not great at all styles. In my opinion, to be a 10 at anything you have to master all styles.

Being the king of grunge is probably a bad thing.

I think I'd be around 7 on guitar. Could be a little lower in comparison maybe because I have the feeling there are quite a few good guitarists on here. My drumskills were at a 6.5 at some time but I probably suck now because I haven't played in about six months or so.

Measured against the other guitarists in this thread, I would give myself about a 6 or 7 I suppose.

It all depends on your criteria, there are a lot of factors that come into play regarding how good someone is.
For me, I'll just say 8/10 to 8.5/10.

Yes.
I even did a song sort of inspired by it (using the "morse code" rhythm in a middle section, but with different letters, obviously) but using traditional mariachi chords and such as the main theme.
I'm still tinkering with the bass part to keep it interesting but still somewhat technical. I even play harmonics along with the bass line.

You're a big Primus fan, Mael, have you worked on any of their songs? I revisited DMV at a show last night during sound check. I forgot how much of a pain that is to play on a regular four string.

I'd say 6/10 on guitar as far as mechanics, but as a songwriter i'd say 8/10.

and just to add.. I woke up listening to Testament this morning and dammit, Alex Skolnick is one of the few guitarists who hit home with his playing on all fronts.. great tone, excellent control.. everything.
