Chapman Stick

Has anyone ever played one of these? My guitarist has one gathering dust in storage so I was thinking of buying it. The thing is more like playing piano than bass, but it might have some interesting possiblities. I've already done my fair share of self-accompanying bass/lead stuff on my five string, but this would be a completely different monster.

The thing that would be the hardest to adjust to is that the heavier strings are in the center as opposed to in ascending order. I'm not sure I have the time to dedicate fully to learning a new instrument.

You could play some fucking cool slide on one of those. Is there a standard tuning?

There's a "tuning" for it but I don't know it off hand. The only problem with playing slide on that is the action is SUPER low. Like barely off the fretboard since it's a tapping instrument. That wouldn't make it very good for slide playing in that respect.

Well, I've played piano and bass for years so the mechanics shouldn't be terribly hard. There will be a steep learning curve, regardless.

you don't have to pick just put the finger on the fret..and you can do some serious damage with those things....you can play 8 finger patterns
I'm aware of the mechanics involved, playing the thing like a traditional bass would be absurd, and not sound terribly good since the action is barely off the fingerboard.

Yeah, no shit. I have to wonder if it's worth getting since you get essentially the same thing with a keyboard.

Maybe I should just get a keytar!
