Amp/cab question

Ok, so I'm looking at getting either a Peavey 5150 II or a Randall V-max. I currently have a Marshall cab with Celestions that is only rated at 100 watts; both of these amps are more powerful (the Peavey is 120 watts tube, the V-max 300 watts solid state) than my cab, could I use my current cab as long as they weren't cranked? I know this may sound like a n00b question, but I've always had a 100 watt head so I never had to think about it.

if your're going with either of them heads especially the V max, get a better fucking cab. The speakers in the cab you have will be farting out like hell

I always thought as a general rule that the head should not have more wattage than the cab or else it'll blow the cab out...of course I don't really know alot about equipment however.

You wont have to change cabs, #1, think of it, who actually plays at 10? You get all that damn feedback and shit when 6 or 7 will be plenty to be heard over a drummer anyday.

Nonetheless, the cabinet should be safe with those wattages, celestions are very good speakers, and are usually rated lower than what they can actually handle.

Moreso than wattage, make sure you impendance matches up. I found out the hard way a few years ago what happens when they don't. :|

Fried the power amp. The one cab is homemade and the speakers didn't have the impedance listed. Needless to say, when i bought a new amp, I had that fucker metered.

Sounds like liquid butter now.

Yeah, it's all at 8 ohms. So Pfloyd, with the Randall (which is prob what I'll get) I'll be ok????

and shut up kyle. nobody cares. you stopped being amusing years ago.

the ohms of the cabinet cant be less than what your head can handle

e.g: if your head can handle a minimum of 8 OHMS make sure your cabinet isnt rated below that and youll be fine.

it can be over 8 OHMS, but never less than your head minimum.

Shit if I know, and I don't care. All I care about is that it sounds good.
