They grew up in a small town west of Arlington called Pantego, which was the first name of the band. They decided this sounded gay and changed it to Pantera, which is Spanish for 'Panther' and was also the name for a high end sports car made back then by Ford.

De Tomaso Pantera (1970)
Series ISeries II
De Tomaso Pantera cannot be described as an engineering masterpiece, nor technology milestone, nor trend setter, nor styling innovation ... it is included in this classic cars archive because it was the first affordable supercar ever appeared. Powered by a Ford "Cleveland" 351 (5.7 litres) V8, this Italian-built exotic was able to offer supercar performance in a bargain price. Therefore it was usually called the "Poor man's Lamborghini".

Whether or not Ford made it is irrelevant to the topic. Leave, noone likes you and you smell like cheese.

Dime picked up his first date in a Pantera car. Apparently they had a wonderful evening that night, so when his brother Vincent came up to him with the idea of changing the band's name, he told Dime to think of something that would be memorable to him. Dime, being a raging teenager back then could only think of that wonderful night down in Dallas when he picked up his future girlfriend-to-be in the Pantera car. At first, Vincent thought it was silly and laughed it off as another one of his younger brother's crazy antics, but the name and the car stuck out like a sore thumb to Vincent, parked out there in front of the ranch. Vincent is later quoted as saying he would wake up with a cold sweat sometimes and all he could think about was that car his brother was driving around. Few weeks later during supper with their parents Jerry and Carolyn, the boys decided on the Pantera name for the band and called Rex and Terry on the phone to tell them the good news.

There you go.

"I'm not gonna name anybody 'cause I'm not gonna promote them. OK, we'll say 'panther' in Spanish (Pantera). You're welcome guys. We might as well be cooking their dinner for them or pushing their little wheelbarrow to the bank for them."

You're all wrong. Dime's favorite horror flick was a movie called "Pan Terror," which was about a guy who went around beating people to death with frying pans. The movie flopped, but the name stuck with Dimebag, who named his band after the movie. Before Terry joined, they had a vocalist from Boston who pronounced it 'Pan-Terra.' They thought this sounded cool, so the name stuck even after he left. And hence it got shortned to Pantera.

too many different stories.
latest one i heard is that they were thinking of getting a new name for the band. the one they were using was already taken and some friend from highschool who really like the pantera sports car suggested pantera and the brothers thought it sounded cool.

A combination of letters from the alphabet were put together to create a 'word' in this case, the 'word' was 'Pantera'

Vinnie was eating his fifth bowl of alphabet soup one day and was trying to spell cat and the word "pantera" magically came up in his bowl.
