Noob question about effect loops

Can someone explain to me how these things work? I've never had an amp with one and I don't want to do something potentially stupid.

Plug your effects send into your rack effects input. Plug your rack output into your effects return. Like magic it sounds like a bazillion bucks.

Don't get your neck tangled in the leads. Too many incredible musicians have been lost this way :tdown:

With an effects loop, if you have external pedals and whatnot, instead of going:

Guitar > Pedals, Effects, Processors, etc. > Amp (meaning all of the amps built in effects, knob settings and channels) > Speaker

it would instead be:

Guitar > Amp > Pedals, Effects, Processors, etc. > Speaker

I've never had much success with any amp's effect loop. I always do effect processing before the guitar hits the amp head.
