inspiration

Post by onetwothreefour »

i'm sure many of you on here have been playing guitar for quite some time. i'm curious; what was the defining song, album, or band that consciously made you decide "i want to play guitar?"

i'm sure pantera is an obvious influence for all of us, but for me, it was really listening to "Maggot Brain" by Funkadelic one night. it's one of the most beautiful, inspirational and mysterious songs i've ever heard. i've been listening to pantera and everything for years but that song made me go into my roommate's room and start playing his guitar right then and there. this was a month or so ago. whatever you play, post your beginnings!

I wanted to join metallica in fifth grade, but it all hit me when i seen some dude with a cool lookin guitar and a red beard on the cover of a magazine and it read "IT'S PANTERA BABY!" The beginning lines went something like "Come on dude we got steaks to eat, booze to drink, and tits to see!"

I thought it would be cool to play guitar with the Foo Fighters when I bought their The Colour and the Shape album. And now I play bass. Funny how things work out.

I still like The Color and the Shape. The radio singles on that album suck, and all their other shit sucks.

For me it had to be when i saw the One video by Metallica, The i was pretty young at the time, but the way the song starts off gloomy, has that classical feel, then gets heavy as fuck just blew me away. After that i got my guitar and started playing everything from Metallica to Nirvana trying just trying to find where i belonged on the instrument.... Clearly after i heard Pantera, i never strayed too far away from that Crushing sound

Saw Rush at a community college in upstate NY in 1974, I was 9 yrs old. (pre-Neil Peart)
While I'm not a huge Rush fan now, Geddy Lee blew me away then and still always amazes me. I still go see them when they come around, the guy is a genius with a bass.

As I got older, Steve Harris, Bob Daisly, Frank Bello and Duff McKeegan
were big influences. While I'm not much of a "slap/pop" player, Flea is an influence also, as well as some funk stuff ie: Bootsy Collins and Stanley Clarke

it was that talky thing peter frampton uses.....

randy rhoads and zakk wylde were two of the biggest reasons why i picked up the guitar.

i dont think i can really pick one single piece of music that is the biggest source of inspiration, maybe the randy rhoads tribute album, the first 4 metallica albums, the great southern trendkill, and a lot of other stuff, as well.

and i cant even touch the shoes of those assholes, and i play punk rock now, go figure...

No single band or song made me want to pick up guitar, I was just into the idea of playing and creating music. That was always my thing.

Black Sabbath, The Warning and Believe it or not Triumph
and of course Zep, then I got into Maiden, Priest and Metallica.

Being near 40 yrs, It was Awesome, back in highschool and after, just waitin for new Rush Maiden Priest Sabbath ACDC Etc. albums to be released. All the best influencial bands came out in that era, then the heavier great band like Pantara Megadeath Slayer and many more just keeps putting more icing on the cake.

:fur: Mom wanted me to play piano :fur:
I told her the only instrument i would play was drums.
At first I liked making noise, and driving everyone crazy but then I heard
Lars Ulrich, Tommy Lee, Nicko Mcbrain, John Bonham and got into it.

Mainly to start shit with people I don't know.

I'd probably say my main influence that made me interested was either stone temple pilots, soundgarden, or rhcp.
