What's Phil's take on the Power Metal era really?

Post by walnut »

Okay, this is a serious question that I've been wondering for a while now. I know Phil's been embarrassed about the old days since he changed his image for the first time. Hes always claimed that Cowboys was Pantera's first "real" album. But anyone remember that website that was up a while back (think it got taken down after Dime's death) called Panterrible? It had a story posted up about Phil kicking some fan's ass who was hanging out with the band backstage, after he pulled out a copy of Power Metal and asked him to sign it.

Can anyone verify this story, or perhaps go into further detail? It just doesn't seem to add up. I mean, sure, I can understand him being embarrassed about his image back then or whatever, but if you watch some old clips you'll notice he was still more or less the same Phil putting on a deep voice and dropping the F bomb every second word. There were a couple of gay songs but most of them were straight up metal, and they were even better live. Some of them could even pass for Cowboys era Pantera. I don't understand what the big conspiracy is all about.

Anyone heard anything about this before, or know of any similar instances?

Okay, found the story:

http://web.archive.org/web/200304272352 ... /index.htm

"And then there's this incident. The Panterrible ones are on tour for Cowboys, and after a gig a fan goes backstage to talk to the band. They talk, and all is cool with the world. Then, this fan, asks Phil, "Hey, would you autograph my album?" and pulls out acopy of Power Metal.

A smart person would laugh and make a joke. A mature person would at least be calm. But no, not these guys. Phil's ego got so wounded that he reacted the only way his little pea-brain would let him - he attacked the fan and tried to kick his ass. Some cool guys, huh?"

Bullshit story, I've personally seen him sign a copy of it, and I've seen Rex laughing about Metal Magic and Projects in the Jungle. The idiots behind the Panterrible site have a massive chip on their shoulder about something.

That has to be untrue. Weren't they still playing a couple of Power Metal tunes when they toured supporting "Cowboys From Hell" anyway?

i'd never seen that before.
There is a cover-up in the music industry, one as big as, if not bigger than, the governmental cover-up of aliens, the Roswell incident, etc.
This dude's clearly doesn't work in PR.

Yes they were. And to the thread starter, Phil never said or acted like he
was embarassed, he might be embarassed as all people are as far as something they did when they were younger, but hes still proud.
Only person that would be emabarassed, or at least act it would have been Vinnie cause Pantera was more bout money to him so hes gotta play the
new Vinnie Paul role. PowerMetal wasnt glam anyways.

I've got a gig from 3 days before CFH's release where they play a couple pre-CFH songs but I've never heard them playing any after CFH's release. Not '91 and onwards at least.

What don't u understand, Vinnie and Dime created the band, money was
made when they toughened shit up and created their own product instead of playin the safe route and doing what everyone else was doing and make just decent money. Vinnie was the business, anytime he was questioned about the old, the real pre phil glam shit, he kept it short and quick, could have made money off rerelease the old shit but wouldn't cause that would damage their rep. Alot of people that like Pantera are normal and its just a CD they own, they don't know every fucking detail like us dweebs do, it would re-open some shit.

Well when I finally launch my Web Of Hair site http://www.webofhair.com there will be off the wall questions that will be asked! Hell I made Dee Snider get choked up on one question when I interviewed him a while back for the Widowmaker zine I did and I even made him spill his drink on another!

You'll have to wait untill my site opens to read and possibly listen to that interview
