Dimes picking technique

When dime plays solos(or sixteenth notes) like at the start of the walk solo and the harmony solos in domination when he uses sixteenth notes is he doing up and down picking? Or is he just picking it with a down stroke.
Thanks guys.

Normally he used legato (hammer ons and pull offs). He certainly didn't pick every single note.

He used alot of legato , especially pull offs onto open strings in the middle of runs, he also used tremlo picking quite alot (see both domination solos), he alternate picked sometimes too, im pretty sure the first run in the cowboys from hell solo is alternate picked (it sounds shit otherwise) and the throes of rejection solo too

When i (try to) play the CFH solo I hardly use any alternate picking.

He most assuredly used alternate picking in the beginning of the CFH solo.

yup, it sounds shit with legato

also the run that goes "12 on B, 15,14,12 on G", before the little slides at the end, is almost certainly alternate picked.

This is totally off topic, but how the hell does he get the pinch harmonics do sound like they do in the intro of 'revolution is my name'? I know theres variations of playin' it, like 'Texas-style' as Dime called it, but im stuck on this. I can't figure it out.

Im pretty sure he recorded a couple tracks with the whammy pedals 2 octave setting, and a wah pedal and just layed them over the top of each other.

I've got a newer digitech whammy pedal and i've heard an original one, they sound the exact same except the newer one has a midioutput and a detune feature, stop talking shit.

I dunno, alot people have these kinda views. Im into Tom Morello too, who uses a load of Whammy Pedal effects n he uses the 1994 release - ive been hearin' a load of people say that the newer versions sound a lot different.

It's just people trying to be elitish anyway, pedals like a whammy don't really get worse over time, even the oldest whammy is a relatively new pedal so theres no major difference. The only pedals that are any different to theyre newer counterparts are vintage ones like original big muffs, hot tubes, etc

1st Run in Cowboys From Hell Solo

Hey guys,

Brand new here, and it won't let me start my own topic, so I'm using this one.

On the first run in the CFH solo (the 11-12-15 going up each string), does Dimebag alternate pick or is he hammering on each time? I think he's hammering on but I'm not sure.

Thanks!

Dead is pretty right, but as far as technique he is playing the notes a half step down then bending to the notes he wanted.

He alternate picks the first 11-12-15 on the string and then picks the first note and hammers on of rest of the same pattern, and repeats this for each string.

Code: Select all

D U D U h h
11-12-15-11-12-15

EDIT: the picked part is palm muted for some of the first strings.

The run from top to bottom of the strings is a triplet pick and then a hammeron for each string

so..

.p p p p p=PICK
11 12 15 11h12h15
(slightly palm muted for the triplet picking.)

EDIT: since the tab looks like bullshit. Its the first 4 notes played are picked, 2 are hammer oned.
