JEesus christ don't people know fucking anything. Dime isn't shred. When you ask about the best shred guitarist, surely you're asking who can go the fastest. That's either Michael Angelo, Gilbert or Vai. Shred is a terrible form of guitar playing. The only player worth a mention in this catagory is Joe Satriani. Lock her up boys.

when people get on steve vai's nuts for being a mindless shredder, i think its retarded. not everything he plays is as fast as he can go. i personally think hes an amazing guitarist with a lot of feeling and uses speed when he feels necessary.
over the course of playing guitar i have heard people with many different interpretations of what "shredding" is. some think of it negatively as a person playing a guitar as if it were some sport that people use to prove themselves to others. and other people think of it as being a great guitarist, that has a lot of control (which seems to mix up fast and slow parts or whatever).

Dime "could" shred, but he didn't. He played some fast fucking stuff, but it was more than just fucking scale work and sweeps all the time. Dime = Non Shred.
The best shredder is Gilbert, or Petrucci. They both tend to play fast alot of the time and can play faster than anyone else in that style. Shredding is a combination of fast alternate picked runs and sweeps.
I wouldn't call Vai shred, because he tends to be a pull off/hammer on and tap man more than alternate picking, not to say he doesn't - He just tries to keep his tone more smooth sounding by avoiding alternate picking when it's not "needed" in the song. Same goes with satch - He is almost purely legato, that ain't shred, just fast as fuck.
