I recently acquired 2 programs that i have no idea how to use, but are supposedly pretty damn good. Got them from a friend so that saved me a few hundred.

I use Acoustica Beatcraft to make the drum tracks, then bring the mixdown of that into Ableton Live 6.0.1 where I record the guitars and vocals in alongside the drums,

Both fairly straight forward.

Don't steal software. Use Reaper. http://www.cockos.com/reaper/

The software doesn't make a difference in how your music sounds.
