Bass effects

Post by Pfl?yd »

Currently I'm playing in a sort of electronic jam band thing. I've been mostly playing straight bass with some synth stuff thrown in. Regardless, I want to expand my pedalboard (a distortion box and a whammy pedal only go so far). Anyone have some cool suggestions for effects that will make my bass sound like pixellated Godzilla farts or other weird shit.

EHX Microsynth and Graphic Fuzz are capable of making some fucked up sounds.

I've never heard of the Graphic Fuzz. I'll have to look it up.

I heard the Microsynth doesn't track bass very well though. :|

The Boss DD6 has some cool effects - hold does electronic glitch sounds really well, warp does some kind of fucked up delay swell. If you get a flanger, or a delay pedal with a single knob that controls the whole delay time, twist that while you play through it for some really odd results. Digial pedals sound nastier

If you really want to make some REALLY fucked up noises,

These are definitely on my shopping list

Right now I have a Boss Bass Flanger (which is pretty subtle to my ears), about four distortion boxes, a Boss Phaser, and a Boss multieffects unit which is good for a "jack of all trades, master of none" box but I think I'd get a lot of better sounds with more specialized pedals. I think i'm going to use the multieffects for phrase sampling and whammy effects mostly and get outboard pedals for more synth/envelope follower/ring modulator sounds.

The cool thing with the phrase sampler is I can loop ostinatos I play and use the whammy feature to play crazy upper register stuff. So far, all the recordings we've done are just me playing clean which works well on its own merit, but I really want to fuck with shit.

And I wonder if those Mid-fi pedals track bass notes. Those would be perfect.

Never knew about that problem with the Microsynth, my bad.
Personally I'd experiment with hooking up some modulation pedals with expression pedals.
Oh yea, my friend has a DD20 and it's fucking fun to play with.

Pfloyd, I use a Line 6 synth multi pedal.
There is an endless amount of fucked up and cool sounds.

I tried running my washtub bass into a Metal Zone and the resulting feedback made all the animals and old people in a two block radius lose control of their bowels.

PABass, I'll definitely check that thing out.

I think the obvious answer is to get a keyboard and shades.

Well, I already have a keyboardist so that's out. I do have some cool-ass shades though.

Damn, PA, my friend has that Line-6 pedal and I tried it out. It doesn't track lower registers worth a shit. What are you trying to do to me!

I think the Bass Microsynth is going ot be the winner.

Sorry floyd, I use it for 3 or 4 effects, I haven't really explored the "play out" ability of all the programs. It's not unusual for me to pay far too much for something that I use very seldom.
