simple songs to play on guitar,but sound impressive?

i'd like to know this,so it'd be something nice to play around a new crowd who're easily amused. i was at this one get together not too long ago and this guy i met there was playing some modern rock/pop songs (can't remember) that sounded and looked fairly impressive to play. he showed me how to play a few of them,and was overly surprised how simple it was to play. anyway,any suggestions?
