Unsung heros, great guitarists that don't get recognized.

The place to talk about instruments, tab, the bands gear and anything else musically related.

Allen West of Obituary/Six Feet Under.

most people when they think of obituary guitarists they think Murphy, which i dunno why he was only on one album. Wests rythms are spot on.

While he may not be much in the "technical" department, his use of color and texture are pretty astounding. As Corgan once said in Guitar World one time, "It's not about technique, it's about creativity."

True, Allan Holdsworth also is a great player who shows amazing technicality and creativity. I'll have to check out this Ron Thal.

sucks for you. i would have gone to G3 just to see Fripp, and would have been bored if i had to sit through Satch, Vai, Petrucci, etc...

allen holdsworth is amazing. i've never heard of ron thal though. i'll check him out too.

you might also wanna check ron's band bumblefoot! Its kind of pop rock with crazy solos. He got recruited recently to play for guns n roses too, so that's cool for him, more $ and publicity.

I don't know if he's as good as I think because I'm not a guitarist, but he sure seems like a good one... Marc Rizzo from Soulfly. I don't even listen to them, a friend of mine linked me to his myspace and I must say I'm impressed. Watch the first two youtube clips.

That was pretty terrible, in my opinion.
Horrible technique, and doesn't have the chops to go as fast as he's trying to go.
The first video I got really bored of him playing a single open chord with some fingerstyle for an entire minute, then the second video was sloppy as shit.

Anyway, while he isn't really under-rated in my opinion, Chris Broderick is a phenomenal player and I don't hear him mentioned much. His playing outside of the metal-genre is wonderful, too.
And his technique is to die for.

for example, this string skipping he does is flawless, and his right hand technique is completely coordinated with his left hand, particularly at the end.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4bLerJddlM

I also think this Bach piece he plays on this one sounds absolutely stunning from all aspects: tone, technique, execution, and dynamics.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-ze51lEt3w

check out the other/related videos of him playing other stuff too. If I could have the cleanliness of his chops or technique or whatever, I'd be a very happy man.

Much agreed. He does the same licks over and over, and his vibrato/bending is crappy. He's pretty good but sloppy as hell.
