Post by Metal66 »

Just learn songs that you like until you can be bothered to learn some theory and maybe some physical exercises.

there's plenty of better players here than me. i started with an acoustic guitar from argos, then bought a red strat copy. then i bought a luminous orange charvel which i exchanged for a black les paul copy. before i swapped the guitars i bought an ibanez destroyer, then a gibson explorer and finally my washburn. so i have a bunch of guitars that i upgraded every 6 months or so. it was a natural progression for me.

as for amps, i started with a starfire, then moved onto marshalls. basically, i knew absolutely nothing about gear whn i started i just learnt from experience as i went along. im really not the best person to ask.

Warhead Dime, dimejandro, metallash, floyd and scrotal tug are the boys for equipment. outlaw could have taught you a thing or too aswell.

Ill give you some advice...you'll suck for awhile, guaranteed. But for dexterity excercises I would suggest starting on the first fret, first string.
Hit each note using all four fingers like:

E---1-2-3-4---
A---1-2-3-4---
D---1-2-3-4---

And so on...Then reverse the process. ...and move all the way up the neck.
At least thats what I've found to be a good excercise. Spanking it now and again doesnt hurt either....
Get killed.

I assume this is what you mean with the tab, not barring 3 strings with a finger. And your strings were upside down.

And don't start playing guitar with stupid chromatic exercises. You'll quit guitar before you can wear out your first set of strings.

The first thing I ever learned was the 12 bar blues riff. From there I learned the basics like "Smoke on the Water" and a bunch of other 3 or so chord riffs. I remember when I first started playing and I played a riff and it actually sounded like the song. That right there was enough to keep me motivated.

Smoke on the Water
Iron Man
Owner of a Lonely Heart
Danzig's Mother

There are also tons of punk riffs by Green Day and The Ramones that are simple and will get you started. I was never much of a punk fan when I started guitar but I wish I would have known about them earlier. It would have been great beginning experience and exercise.

Practise 38 hours a day.
In order to do that, I have to play 400 notes per second to go back in time.
But I stopped it, because the ageing process went faster and I killed people.

and anyway, yeah, dexterity exercises are the way to go. I'm amazed how much better I've become just by doing these. It builds confidence in your muscle memory which translates over into much better improvisation (playing by instinct). When you're not screwing up on your fretting those little mistakes don't add up into frustration.

I started by playing nirvana songs because they were easy enough and I was really into that at the time. Don't put the bar too high when you're starting out or you'll get demotivated.
