how do people do death metal vocals? do all dm vocalists have some sort of processor, akin to something like a distortion pedal for a guitar?

I think (although I'm not sure) that most DM vocalists growl at very low volumes?

It's basically just using the back of your throat. Some of them do use pitch shifters and distortion though.

ive tried DM vocals and i can only operate at very low volumes. some of the genuinely good sounding singers of that genre seem to have a lot of power behind them and it baffles me how they can generate those sounds. even though im not a massive fan of DM vocals, if they can genuinely sing like that then i can truly fucking respect them. its amazing how people manipulate their voice like that. its on par to opera singers. although members of both musical catagories probably despise each other. what am i on about ive drunk too much. woooo.

i agree that opera singers are much more skilled in their sonics. however in terms of difficulty, both death metal vocalists and opera singers operate at similar levels. this may well be many pints of cider speaking, but i appreciate both equally. having said that, i'd rather listen to opera than DM. but much like DM theres only a few people i genuinely like. i cant, for instance, listen to ANY female opera singer. ive digressed so much off what i meant to say i feel stupid for continuing typing. im sorry floyd for this awful post. death metal sucks and so does ballet.

i was unaware that i'd divulged the entirety of my musical library to the board. i listen to very little opera music. i have maybe 12-13 operatic songs on my playlist, taken from about 14 CDs that are in my parents' houses. i have a similar amount of Death Metal songs. i was simply comparing the two, not trying to appear cultured.

Death metal vocals (as I have heard them) come from the bottom of the diaphragm and the back of the throat. Singing like that is only as difficult as it is to sing in the lower baritone/bass range in that it requires a lot more abdominal force because lower notes require more energy. DM vocals don't require intonation really, so manipulation of the facial muscles to command pitch isn't even really an issue, so it's purely endurance and little else.

And it's no secret that "singing" like that is horrible for your voice in general. It's a lot of undue strain on the vocal chords.

i want you to check out this dudes voice. im seen him perform live, he doesnt use a harmonizer or anything. he uses some REALLY weird techniques....
his main voice he inhales rather than exhales to get that sound. he also has the squeal scream and "predator" voice.
