What is there to even talk about here? Of course Phil was the reason Pantera broke up.
The rest of the guy's were ready to start working on new Tera stuff.
Meanwhile, Phil being in the doped-up state he was in started to hate everybody( which is what happens when someone is addicted to smack) and decided to waste his time on Down and Superjoint instead.
I don't think its right for anyone to blame Phil for some psycho going on a killing spree, but he is unquestionably to blame for Pantera's break-up.
Phil's started losing his mind in the Trendkill days, and he completely lost it during the Steel tour. That's what smack does to you. Being the vocalist in the best metal band on the planet isn't a good mix.

Still there must be some reason why he got along with Bower and Co. but not Vinny and Dimebag......... true though, people with personality disorders and shit can alienate even normal people from them. I don't know.
Poor guy though made a turnaround though and I think is a genuinely good person, I give him the benefit of the doubt. Good luck Phil

He started to hate everyone because he was doped up? He was in two bands during that time so obviously he didn't hate EVERYONE. Maybe he just didn't want to do Pantera for awhile. God forbid you do something for 15 years of it and get burned out for awhile. However, I do agree he was in the wrong for not just coming out and telling Dime and Vinnie that he didn't want to do Pantera for a few years instead of leaving them hanging.edgecrusheraza wrote:What is there to even talk about here? And I don't think Down is a waste of time....Down is pretty amazing. Down is a band he could grow old in. You think Phil wanted to be 49 years old and singing Mouth for War??? Who wants to see that?
Some Pantera fans just need to move the fuck on. It's over. Find something else to latch on to.

Good point. But if Down II's progression was any indication of the sound they're headed in, then I don't think he will be, either.PD wrote:I don't see him singing Lifer at that age either, honey.summers_eve wrote:Down is a band he could grow old in. Exactly. Down is so diverse, they could easily turn into a fucking acoustic band if they wanted to and sing songs like "Where I'm Going" over and over and it would STILL be Down. It's just more of a band that you can go in different directions in.HoustonKJ wrote:Good point. Pantera on the other hand, is not. They have one formula and one formula only. It is not a band that was designed to be around as long as the Rolling Stones or Aerosmith. I'd like to think Down will be around for years to come.

I see where your coming from but Pantera were probably more capable of branching out in other directions, they just chose not to. Im glad pantera ended in some ways because they never put out a half assed album in my opinion, and at the end of the day if everyones heart isnt in it then the cd is going to suck.

That's how I should've worded it, yes. Pantera were obviously unbelievable musicians who could've branched out and played Miles Davis if they'd wanted to, but they found a formula that worked for them and made it a point not to stray. I think that's why they had/have such a loyal fanbase that you never see anymore.dead forever wrote:I see where your coming from but Pantera were probably more capable of branching out in other directions, they just chose not to. i joined this forum to reply to this thread coz i watched the behind the music thing and it bummed me out watchin it
I think phil is guilty of running pantera into the ground and depriving people of theyre insane , energetic live shows.I beleive the fame got to him and he started to act the cunt.Bein a wank to his fans on stage...Due to back problems he said he was finding it hard to go on doing live shows as well as he could..but he didnt get his surgery due to the recovery period, if he had gotten his surgery panter could have taken that 1 or 2 years out and came back kcicking as much ass as they used to.But to get rid of the pain took heroin so that he wouldnt feel his pain during shows but it affected the performance, embaressing to watch, falling over and shit all the time, anad eventually overdosed on the shit...then they split and nomore pantera...then dime joins damage plan and gets shot near the begging of a show?....i dont think its phils fault dimes dead, but he is not totally innocent...if dime wasnt in damage plant he wouldnt have got shot
