this is a copy of an email i got from silenoz after i emailed asking about his guitar rig. they have a heavy ass tone, especially for playing in standard E.
hey Bill what's up,
for the PEM recording we used the Engl 120 Savage head and my Boss GX-700
preamp and mixed them pretty much equally, 2 left and right. On DCA we
used the same Engl head, left and right in the mix and a Peavey 5150 in
the center.
Now both Galder and I play the latest Engl head model, called Powerball,
and that's just what it is, it fuckin' rips! I don't use any effects or
anything, just straight through the amp. We play the amp pretty loud, and
even if it's on half it's a monster. The gain is not on full, as we want
the dist to not be too muddy. Live, our guitarsound is hardly EQ'd at all.
This is an amp that makes things pretty clean, you can hear any small
mistake(s), so it's good for keeping yourself in shape as you have to
really be on the alert. We tune to E standard, but in the studio we've
sometimes used a 7 string tuned to B in some parts to beef it up, but live
it's strictly 6 string E standard tuning. Stringwise Galder uses 10-46's,
and I use 10-56's (7 string sets).
