Im only familiar with the Boss MT-2, it offers a lot in form of equalization, but its very easy to over equalize it to where it sounds too digital....its decent at best...Boss offers like 5 other types of distortion too depending on what type of sound youre looking for. You also need to consider what type of pickups you have, if they're passive, active, what type of head you're running through...Id personally goto a guitar shop, bring your guitar, and ask to play around with their pedals, using equipment thats close to what you own. You'd also be surpised, there's alot of junky looking stomp boxes out there that dont look to appealing but can offer what you want.

I use a DOD Grunge pedal. When coupled with my 15 band eq it gives off some wicked sounds. I have tried an Ibanez tube screamer, the popular Metal Zone and a bunch of off shoot shit brand fuzz pedals.

For the typical metal sound you can get away with a fuzz pedal of your choosing if it has enough gain. You'd be wise to add some EQ to shape it into something decent.

My Boss PW10 V-Wah offers the greatest sounding distortion I've ever heard. I have tried numerous pedals to try and replace needing the wah for the distortion so I could get a better wah, but I've never found one (Searched through Keeley, Boss, EHX, MXR, rackmount stuff, pods... nout)

So yeh, if you get a chance to, check out the gain knob on the Boss V-Wah

They both make nice paperweights and doorstops.

I actually used to own that- its pretty good
I would use it in conjunction with other pedals and a decent amp though, not a good stand alone pedal.
