Finally made up my mind...
Picked up one of these this afternoon after playing it.
Very nice middle of the road guitar, for sure. Not expensive (600 USD) but also not rickety like some imports tend to be, Korean made rather than Chinese or Indonesian, and it came with active pickups (EMG 81/60). The pic really doesn't do it justice. Its a much more attractive guitar in person.

The ESP EX is a bit severe on the edges, but it's smaller and lighter than most traditional type Explorers. It's about the same weight as the Epiphone Korina, by my guess. And the neck is perfect... at least for me. Thicker than an Ibanez, but thinner than a Gibson.
I also tried out an Ibanez 8 string while I was shopping. Not to buy it, but just to play the monstrous thing. I have to say, all the interest I had in an 8 string guitar was totally crushed. The lowest string sounded and felt terrible. Not recommending it...

I really want to get my hands on an Edwards and try it, but 1,000 USD is way too much to pay for a guitar I haven't tried first so I went with the EX.
I used to be sold on Ibanez, but the post lawsuit Destroyer is ugly and the ESP has a more comfortable neck.

I'm saving for a B.C. Rich Stealth. I can get one new for 800 bucks. Thing sounds great.

That or an Ibanez has been my "next guitar" for a while. Kind of hard to justify when I haven't set up my studio to performance level though.

White Explorer + matching headstock = And which model did you play? Maybe it's the fact that I'm used to my heavy bass, but the EX 400 really doesn't feel all that heavy to me.DBS wrote:the one i played was too heavy and annoying as fuck whether i played it sitting down or standing up. the neck was too thick but the pickups were great. i love white explorers though.
I was sold on Ibanez for a long time until a friend had an ESP and I tried it. I find the ESP neck much more suitable for my playing style.long4theblur wrote:That or an Ibanez has been my "next guitar" for a while. Kind of hard to justify when I haven't set up my studio to performance level though.
And what sort of setup do you have now?

i played that exact model. it's a lovely looking guitar and it sounds great, so if you're comfortable with it then it's a good purchase. i just found it really awkward to play. The Doctor wrote:White Explorer + matching headstock = And which model did you play?
