Tuning a six string down two and a half steps?

Post by Chog »

Alright my guitar is set up for E standard but if you want to go down to B would you have to get it setup differently so its not all buzzy and crap? I've gone one step down and it sounds alright, its a Cort m700 with locking tuners and stock pickups on it? You would need heavy gauge strings too? I'm learning Carcass stuff and want to play along with the albums, not in happy fairy Kill em all E tuning.

get some thick strings and try it. You may have to adjust the bridge abit to try and make some tension.

If you play in this tuning alot get a 7 string. seven string standard tuning is beadgbe.

Also a fixed bridge is much easier to use when changing tunings and such.

Thanks man. Maybe I should just get a seven so I have a guitar for E and dropped D separate. What gauge do you use for B tuning?

You will have to make adjustments. If you can't e bothered to do it properly/can afford it, take it to a tech. You're probably going to need extra springs in the back, or at least a change of tension to keep the bridge in check.

Thanks chaps I'm not game to adjust it myself so I'll have to pay, ah well it'll be worth it. When you're tuned that low do you have to dial down the gain to stop it sounding muddy? A few youtube videos I saw in that tuning sounded like shit.

Always use the bare minimum of gain/distortion to get the sound you want

see this is why i always endorsed 7 strings/baritone guitars. if its sounding too muddy to deal with I would get new pickups, and of course turn down the gain as much as possible

In people's experiences what are the best sounding pickups for metal? I've never bought any before just used stock ones :negro:

If you decide to get another guitar and do not opt for a 7 string, you could always try a longer scale guitar (aka baritone guitar), they seem to have a tighter, more focused tone than putting thicker strings on a normal scaled guitar...
