Promoting your band...

Post by Sam »

...can anyone please give some good pointers? Especially when things aren't happening for awhile, procrastination comes into play...what's some good ways to keep the band always happening, updating, etc. I was thinking keep booking shows. But lately since we lost our jam space, we haven't been getting together that much, and only perform together @ our shows that are booked. I feel like I'm doing other things when I should be pushing the band. Man fronting a band has it's heavy load, but I'm asking for some advice, and experience from all of you.

Thanks man, that's great, and I'll post it there. It's just that I'm looking for ways to keep us active in the real world, in our state, etc.

Yeah, I agree. Basement shows are a good way to get the word around... theyre more personal I think, even if there is only a few spuds in the room. I've played packed basement shows, and almost empty ones.. The empty ones just treat as practice at a different house unless it's where you play regularly

Soundclick is good. If nothing but for confidence, I listen to alot of those bands and fart. My band was #1 on the hard rock chart for one month.

Send your damn cheesy demo to every club you can. :)

Ask other bands in town if you can open for 'em. It's a shitty slot because everyone's there to see the headliner but it gets you and your music out there and hell, if you blow the headliner off with a wicked stage show and music, they just might be opening for you next time :D

Also, get to know the people who are involved in your local music scene really well. Other bands, promoters, venue owners, etc. I happen to be good friends with the guy who does 95% of the booking for metal around here, and as a result he offered us the opening slot on the Red Chord show. Of course, since we don't have a vocalist, I had to say no, but that's not the point heh.

It is about shows, but its also about fan base. It also has alot to do with talent and style. People are very critical about music, so if you suck it up night after night, its going to be hard to get a fan base going.

Website, mailing list, demo cd, free sites like myspace.com, purevolume.com, websites or magazines that review music, there's also TONS of books you can purchase that cover sooo many topics regarding music, from the business side of it, to promotion, there's just so much out there- Although I would definately say have a good 'product to sell'. No amount of promotion, books, and websites can compensate for talent.
Get killed.

You should go on American Idol and be like Bo Bice.
