finally getting a bass stack

I'm obviously buying some used equipment to save $$$$

I'm looking at this cab:

http://www.classicacafe.com/Content/Pea ... TX_Cab.asp

the guy is selling it for $350, I think that's a good deal for an 8x10. Ultimately I'd love to go with Ampeg but I don't think I'm gonna find an 8x10 or two 4x10s for that kind of money.

I'm not too sure what kind of head I should get. I want something that's going to give me a real gritty, punchy tone. I want my mids to be more prominent, and my lows to really growl but I don't want them to be overpowering and sound mudded up, and i want my highs to be twangy.

I've heard good things about tubes, should I go with a tube amp to achieve that kind of tone? Also, what would you suggest me getting?

I have a small budget, around 1200 bucks, so keep that in mind.

You're better off doing the Peavey, they are reliable and friendly on the wallet. Ampeg got sold off to a Vietnamese company so I would stay away.

Tube amps are grindy but also aren't as fast on the attack. I like super-clean amps and use an overdrive or something to add snarl when I need it.

The cab looks like a good deal but christ I'd hate to cart that thing around. I hope it has wheels!

I have Avatar cabs and they're fucking awesome and were inexpensive. But if you only have a $1200 budget, I'd just get that cab and a good head.

And CFH is right, avoid Ampeg like the plague now.

what head would you suggest me checking out? I am going to pick up the cab on Thursday so I hope I can have a head to bring with me and test it out. I'm pretty sure I am going to want to go with a tube head, from what I have read, tubes will probably complete the sound I have been looking for for so long. Suggest away, bass players!

Try to find an old Mesa, Traynor, or Peavey. If not, try this

What gear do you really want hektik? I mean, if you could choose one amp head, and one cab, what would they be?
I would do that and research the used market (ebay, craiglist, harmony central, forums for that certain manufacturer) and see what they go for and just save up until you can get it.

Go to Talkbass.com and look in their classifieds. I think that place is a lot safer to buy shit than places like Ebay or CL. They even have a rating system.

For the record, I've not been screwed on ebay or CL a single time.

I've been burned a few times so I avoid Ebay from individual sellers most of the time.

I actually got a broken bass amp over here. It's a rogue combo amp that someone gave to me. It's sat in storage for like 3 years now.

why don't you throw it out if it's broken?

I dont know, it will turn on, I've checked the board and there are no burned resistors, it just will not play any sound. As a matter of fact I think the speaker is okay.

I've been meaning to delve into it deeper, just haven't.

Power transformer, methinks.

And yeah, don't buy the Behringer. Might as well pay $400 for a paperweight.

I had a TNT 130 from like the early 80's and I couldn't kill it. I still have my TKO 115 from back in the mid-90's and it won't die either.
