So basically I was in attendance for the show and while there have been a lot of different reports, here was mine from what I remembered of this bizarre show.


A bunch of local bands opened up though I don't quite remember who they were. I think X-Factor 1 was one of them but I could be wrong. Anyway, the lights went off and Damageplan took the stage. About 30 seconds into the set, a burly guy who looked about 6'1-6'2 wearing a Columbus Blue Jackets hockey jersey came marching on to the stage. It seemed kind of weird at first because we thought he was going to stage dive or was going to do something. Suddenly he grabbed Dimebag and held him in a head lock and pulled out what appeared to be a 9 mm (though it was kind of hard to see from the angle that i was at). He fired 2 or 3 shots in the side of his head. The entire crowd froze at that point and kind of stepped back. As far as the band went, Pat Lachman lowered his microphone a little and just froze up. Vinnie was the last one to stop playing his instrument and he slowly rose from his drum seat. Though this is what I report as if it was in slow motion, a lot of it happened within what had seemed had been a matter of seconds.

I looked back and saw Rick (owner of the Alrosa) running back and forth trying to find a phone and panicking. The next thing I knew, everyone took off running for their life with the remaining security in the back trying to escort people outside. While I was outside, I heard shots being fired inside of the venue and suddenly a cop car came flying into the parking lot. I saw Officer Niggemyer run out of his vehicle and enter through the back of the stage with a shotgun strapped to his back. I heard the gun shot that put Gale down. It was awful to think that had he not arrived when he did, God only knows how many casualties would have happened.

Anyway, I was at the venue until about 2 a.m. filling out police reports and talking with some friends of mine to make sure they were ok. It didn't settle in that everything had happen until throughout the week. It was as if I watched a really violent movie or played a really violent video game that had my stomach churning for the rest of the week. My biggest concern was what would happen with the Alrosa after this event. I remember speaking with Rick shortly after it happened as his father passed away a week or 2 after it all went down. I told him that no matter what happened out of this he couldn't shut the Alrosa down even if it would never be the same after this. Sure enough, he decided to keep the doors open. Bless his heart and everything he has been through. Anyone around the Columbus scene knows that Rick is a genuine guy that would never do anything to endanger anyone else's life. He re-opened Alrosa at the beginning of the year with a memorial show.


3 years later, while I don't attend Alrosa as much as I use to (simply because there aren't that many shows that I am really interested in seeing there and Cleveland is stealing the Ohio metal scene one by one) I still attend a lot of concerts. While that night still hangs in the back of my head as it's something I don't think I've ever really come to terms with, it made me closer to the scene that I have ever been before and made me a little more of my surroundings at concerts. Some haven't been back to another show since that show but concerts are what I live for and it just goes to show that nothing can stop me from doing what I love which is attending as many concerts as I can and enjoying life as it is for me.
