I decided to purchase this album because of Killjoy and Phil Anselmo's involvment, because I have loved Necrophagia for a long time. I was very pleased with what I found. Viking Crown's sophmore release 'Innocence From Hell' is a very good black metal album that strangely meanders through out its length. Strating out as Phil Anselmo himself playing everything on Viking Crown's debut, the addition of vocalist Killjoy and Phil's wife Opal (whose 'Southern Isolation' E.P. was brilliant) on keyboards allowed Phil to go into deeper terriory.

The album goes in many directions musically. The songs range from a brilliant one and a half minute keyboard solo ("Birth of the Devil Fetus"), to a sludge meets black metal type track ("The Burning Embers of Mockery"), to flat out black metal ("The Long and Mighty Reign of Satan"). After several stellar tracks, Viking Crown explode into "The Red Flames of Sin". The track is a brutal black metal assault on the sences - also my favorite. From that, it goes to a beautifully depressing five and a half minute instrumental done by Opal - very pleasing no the ears after "The Red Flames of Sin". For the next three tracks the production pretty much goes from a decently polished sound to a raw and edgey sound that truly brings out the spirit of traditional black metal. One of those tracks is the nearly ten minute epic "Raped by an Angel". Unlike most bands, when Viking Crown does a song this long, they do not slow down or soften up. The song is an aggressive and fastpaced work of black metal genius that brings out the best of Viking Crown.

Viking Crown's sophmore release 'Innocence from Hell' is a very good, very diverse, and very odd black metal album. If you are intersted in this becuase you like Pantera, this is not for you, but this is for black metal purists who crave great music. There is only one liner not: "Recorded under the influence of Wild Turkey, Weed, and Black Candles." And that perfectly describes the far out sound that they have created.

The first Viking Crown album is some of the worst music I've ever heard.

I listened to it again recently and didn't think it was quite that bad. Some of it's alright. Killjoy was definitely an upgrade in the vocals department, though.
