Unless you're playing live (maybe even if you are), don't waste your money on outboard gear. I would tell you to get a decent DAW but you must have one already. The software on any big name DAW should be good enough for more or less any home studio purpose, in my humble opinion.

Edit: some people say that certain wood treatment/painting affects the resonance, but I don't really think that's something that normal people need to take into consideration.

I'm sure you won't be disappointed with either one. As long as an electric guitar isn't made of balsa wood you aren't going to have problems, mahogany and basswood are relatively similar anyway. I would just get whichever you can buy in natural finish, or whichever is cheaper

Most new squier guitars are great value once they have some good pickups in. I would never consider buying a USA fender, but they are a lot more expensive here as they're obviously imports.
